BIOGRAPHY

RAFAEL MORTOL CARVIA was born August 19, 1935 in Granada and died in the same city at age 68 to fulfil, in July 2003.
Was trained as a sculptor with the Granada painters, that leave from Luís de Vicente, leathers already from a very early, in the most prestigious workshops, as López Burgos, and as an intern at the time, so essential for the formation of the artistSchool of art and crafts. Hence his solid training and profundísima wisdom on the art of imagery, from knowledge of the behaviour of all sorts of materials, the nobility of the different wood, the humidity of the mud, the Temperance of the bronze, the hardness of the marble, the warmth of the colors. Rafael always spoke of the attributes of matter as if it were its character.
This masterly management and deep knowledge of the matter, was perhaps what pushed you to make the qualitative leap that took him from the master and domain of the craftsman, the mysterious adventure and ignorance at the time of the risk of developing, to interest in disclosing, in addition, the mystery (perhaps the mystery is no more than the lack of knowledge) of the deep essence of that same area.
Therefore, from that moment, Rafael Mortol, would be the sculptor, being erected thereafter as the poet of the internalization of the matter. In that another search in that now his intention or intuition, not interested especially the alteration of the appearance of the forms already given, but that on the basis of a basic idea which is the human body, with a predilection for the female bodyprovisions him to achieve his own style, the subjection of such forms to a minimum distorting gesture. The realism of his figures, disfiguring it in intended to show in the play, which abstract has being, gaining all his work a stylistic cohesion, a very own style quite particular.
Its versatility and knowledge of the art in history, led him to travel through space and time; from the altars in cathedrals and churches by more pilgrims places, the thrones of the Christ of the Gypsies and the Virgen de la Esperanza, image of San Cecilio…., from his studio in the Alcaiceria, where he worked a significant fund sizes, (work that is recognized by the inclusion in the encyclopedia of Flemish art, three volumes, forthcoming, directed by Professor D. Manuel López, supported by the team "The Hazel"). In his allegorical interpretations of the classical myths, I abduction of Leda, abduction of Europe..., already in his Bohemian study of calle Huertas in Madrid; from the baroque to modernity.

Rafael Mortol Carvia moves his Studio to the Madrid of the 1970s, and remains there in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His workshop to the calle Huertas ras witnessed these bustling decades, cataloged as a sociological phenomenon. In Madrid it emerged thanks to the reaction and energy of the artist as he injected concern and a new way of seeing the world. To the world. It is a time to work hard but fruitful. It works the portrait where a sculptor measured full capacity of material performance of the spirit. Fruits of this experience were the first award Commemorative Medal of the Silver Jubilee of the promotion of the King in the general Academy of Zaragoza. And anthological exhibition at the home of cows of the community of Madrid, in the Retiro, 1990. This extensive exhibition and participation in the most important sculpture exhibition that took the city of Granada in the savings in in 1972 along with Sanchez, Cayetano Hannibal, López Burgos, Bernardo Olmedo, and many more up in number fourteenenvanecía you it greatly.
His works are distributed in important collections of United States, European and several Latin American republics. Also his work is part of the funds of the prestigious Hall of art: Van Dijck of Gijón.
